Très beau livre humain, romanesque, dans lequel on découvre aussi le monde de la sculpture. Le personnage est d'autant plus attachant qu'il démarre difficilement dans la vie, confié à un sombre oncle italien par sa mère émigrée en France pour apprendre la sculpture. Son physique peu avantageux le dessert mais sa virtuosité d'artiste en fait la coqueluche d'une société qui découvre le fascisme. Toute l'histoire est tournée autour de sa relation avec une jeune femme et sa famille qui marquera son œuvre à jamais.
