Ughhh what? I had a great time and had a lot of fun with this movie, but I think I would still consider this a bad movie. I get Boots Riley has a very strange and unique way of telling his stories, but holy shit this movie was so random and unnecessary. Lots of visuals that obviously resemble metaphors and messages but doesn’t elaborate or expand on them. Plot points that pop up and are either hastily fixed with a one liner or never addressed. This film is so goddamn weird and awful, but so funny and cool at times. I loved the wobbly camera effect they did with LaKeith Stanfield as the Demon, it’s subtle but it feels mystical and made those scenes intriguing. The colors in this movie pop sickenly and the lighting is bizarre and colorful. I like how unique this film is. I thought the story was all over the place, I thought the people taking off their skin was such a loud on the nose metaphor for how corporations can use imposters (pay people off) to leverage certain stories and promote certain ideals. We get it, that message has been repeated countless times in other medias. The ball of trash I guess resembled her issues with evictions and money? Still lost on that one. And the ending with the strike resolving the conflict felt abrupt and didn’t really feel well deserved. Whatever, i love myself some weird movies. We make movies so we can suspend our beliefs and immerse ourselves in another world with new experiences and complex characters. But personally, this movie was far too bizarre and confusing to take its message, story, or character development seriously. 6/10
